American Cancer Society Marks 100 Years of Saving Lives from Cancer

The American Cancer Society will mark its 100th birthday on May 22, 2013. The Society is the nation’s largest voluntary healthcare non-profit organization and the country’s largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, contributing more than $3.8 billion. Nearly 14 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will have the chance to celebrate a birthday this year thanks in part to the Society’s efforts.

Turnage Chapel Congregational Methodist Church will have a benefit Fish Fry on May 18 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Plates will be $10 each, and will include hushpuppies, and coleslaw and cake. Proceeds will go to the Building Fund for the Church. Donations will also be appreciated.

Wesley Home Care Director Carol Tatum, RN and Wesley Home Care Representative Wanda Murphy, RN, will lead a discussion on recovering from surgery or illness at the Senior Circle Lunch and Learn program on May 17 at 11 a.m. in the Glenn Smith Room at Wesley Medical Center.

The seminar is part of an on-going monthly series, featuring local physicians and community leaders discussing a variety of health and wellness topics. Tatum and Murphy will discuss how to stay healthy, happy and at home after major medical events.
